Congratulations again to the 2011 Wolf Pack Award winners!

Gonzaga University (Most Improved)

Patricia Killen, Gonzaga University (Friend of KEEN)

Chris Kitts, Santa Clara University (Outstanding Faculty Member)

Saint Louis University (Best in Class)

For your convenience, an electronic attendee list has been created and is available on the 2012 KEEN Winter Conference event page.

And for those of you who missed the 1 minute summary of activities on KEEN campuses, here’s the one from Chris Kitts at Santa Clara University that stole the show:

My name is Chris K, and I’m from SCU
And in the next 60 seconds, I’m going to tell you
About one of the things that we’re doing for KEEN
And it’s one of the things that we think is extreme.

Our one big contribution of all the things we’ve done to date
Is our work with other KEEN schools – how we collaborate.
You heard back in October about creating triple-E.s,
Or “Entrepreneurial Engineering Enterprises” if you please.

We’re having teams of students work together to create
Opportunities to design and build and then to operate
Engineering systems, from space to undersea,
With partners SLU, WPI, Baylor, and of course MSOE.

Now to better prepare our students, to help them really shine
We’re adding in new course, such as Smart Product Design
So if any of this is interesting, and you want to hear some more,
Just grab me in the hallway and I’ll share details galore.

This year, 2011, has seen a number of Network-changing milestones. One that brings with it mixed feelings is the dissolution of our KEEN Board of Advisors. The Board consisted of Mac Banks, Bob Hisrich, David Pistrui, Liz Kisenwether and Rich Nazarian. The advisors have been instrumental in helping identify engineering schools to be invited into the Network, in helping those schools author winning proposals and helping in giving guidance to the schools after they have been admitted into the Network. Foundation staff now feels the Network is at a point in its maturation where we are no longer able to effectively utilize the advisors as they have previously served us. KEEN therefore said thanks to the advisors at the Fall KEEN meeting and awarded them plaques of appreciation for their valuable service.

Kettering University’s terms are but eleven weeks long, allowing for forty hours of instruction. Four sections of the course over two years have proved that students can appreciate the risks, processes, and rewards of entrepreneurship in this short time frame. Students begin with a self-created idea around which to build a business, vote for best ideas, form teams (companies), and pursue the projects to develop a business plan for presentation at the conclusion of the term. Alternately, some teams are provided industrial patents to commercialize as examples of intrapreneurship. Evaluation of the results by faculty outside the course and the supplier of the patents indicate that, indeed, you can teach entrepreneurship in forty hours. This paper provides examples of student projects and discusses the project development process.

Recently Foundation President Jim Rahn connected with the President of the Acton Foundation for Entrepreneurial Excellence, Rick O’Donnell. They encouraged Tim and me to share the AFEE resources with you. Most of what is below is directly from Mr. O’Donnell.

While all the resources could serve various purposes in your programs, the Acton Guides and the Acton Hero site seem most closely aligned with the KEEN mission.

www.actonguides.org –best notes and articles, as well as an e-mail tool to help you manage networking and mentoring requests. These notes were given to 90,000 students and other young aspiring entrepreneurs in 2009.

Four in particular that may be useful for introducing entrepreneurship and aspects of the entrepreneurial mindset via modules:

Stars & Steppingstones

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

Everyone Needs a Little RLC

A Message to Garcia

You can access summaries and pdfs quickly at http://www.actonguides.org/articles.php

www.actonhero.org – the start of a site to capture entrepreneurial hero stories to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs. The site will have nearly a hundred by the end of the year. It also contains a kit (“30 Minutes with an Entrepreneurial Hero”) that is a great activity for students to go meet and interview successful entrepreneurs. Watch the first few minutes of Lee Walker’s video to get a sense of the videos.

Additional resources include:

www.actonmba.org – main school website, where you can get a sense of curricular and teaching approaches as well as how they differ from a traditional MBA.

www.actontoolkit.com – for award-winning sim games and online courses, which are fun for kids/challenging for Harvard-Acton MBA’s. Students often play them on their own, parents often play them with their younger children, and we have teacher guides for teachers who want an entire class to play the games, which we do with our students at Acton. Just play the intro to Robo-Rush and Marty Raygun to get a sense of how they work.

www.actonfoundation.org – resources for teachers, especially entrepreneurs who want to learn the Socratic Method to become case teachers of entrepreneurship. Includes a free assessment for potential teachers to diagnose their strengths and weaknesses, developed with leading case teachers at Harvard Business School. Watch the Ben Shapiro video to get a sense of some of the teaching resources available to those who take the test and register.

The Entrepreneurial Journey is their flagship course. According to their site, it “delivers the tools, skills, and judgment your students need for a long and meaningful life as an entrepreneur. The Entrepreneurial Journey takes students on an adventure, from evaluating an opportunity, to launching a business, through growing it, and finally to harvesting the profits.”

If you have an opportunity to review or use any of them, we’d certainly appreciate your feedback.

Kristen

Did you see the press on UDM’s new 7-course graduate curriculum on Electric Vehicle Engineering? See a sampling below:

The Detroit Free-Press (11/25) reports, “Ford Motor Co. and the University of Detroit Mercy announced Tuesday that they have developed a new seven-course advanced electric vehicle program to help Ford and other engineers develop the skills needed to build tomorrow’s electric cars.” Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of global product development, “said the industry’s push toward electric vehicles is creating the most fundamental change in the automotive engineering world in at least 15 years,” and that “as a result, engineers trained to develop and integrate the new systems used in electric vehicles are in high demand.”

The Detroit News (11/25, Hoffman) reported that Ford and UDM “developed a graduate-level curriculum focusing on disciplines such as power electronics, energy management and power flow. Through this program, other academic offerings and in-house classes, Ford hopes to retrain some 2,000 of its engineers over the next decade.” Kuzak “said his company’s decision to take electric vehicles into the mainstream is creating more challenges for engineers than any development since electronic engine control computers were introduced.” University of Detroit Mercy “has been working closely with Ford for some time to develop classes to train students in these emerging technologies. Leo Hanifin, dean of the College of Engineering and Science, said a curriculum for experienced engineers was the next logical step.” Similarly, the News noted, “General Motors Co. has been working with the University of Michigan to develop a curriculum for training battery engineers.”

The Wired (11/25, Borroz) “Autopia” blog reported, “The Advanced Electric Vehicle Program offers graduate-level courses emphasizing electric and hybrid drivetrain technology and components like power control and energy management systems.”

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that comes ready to host a blog (web log) website. It is the platform used to create the KEENnetwork.com website. It has a relatively simple set of concepts:

Your “blog” (i.e. website) contains “posts“. Each post contains some content such as text, an image, or an article like this one. People viewing a post can make comments on it, and these are typically shown below the post content. Comments can be commented on, thus creating a threaded discussion on the topic of the post.

Posts are organized into “categories“. Categories can be split into sub-categories and sub-sub-categories and so on. Posts are placed on a page of the website when published. By default, each category gets its own page. When a page is displayed, the 7 most recent posts to that category are displayed on the page. The one exception to this is the home page (also called the front page), which displays the 7 most recent posts to any of the categories on the site (including the ‘uncategorized’ category, which is the default category for a post).

Posts can also have “tags” to help users search for items of interest on the site. Tags are useful because posts from different categories can be “tagged” with the same tag. This means that a search of the tag term will find all the posts associated with that tag regardless of the category in which the post resides.

Your blog can also contain static pages. Pages are organized hierarchically (just Unix or Windows file systems). These static pages are simply containers for more posts (just like categories are containers for posts).

WordPress supports “themes” which are the “skins” for viewing the blog. Each theme may define the layout of a front page, a category list page, a single post page etc. Themes also define the colors, icons, graphics and other visual elements on the site. The look and feel of the website is primarily the responsibility of the theme.

Themes are themselves PHP pages which contain “template tags” (WordPress standard PHP function calls) to dynamically retrieve information about categories, posts, comments etc.

Themes generally make good use of CSS (cascaded stylesheets) to define the look and feel of the pages.

WordPress also supports “plugins” which offer additional functionality, such as a calendar, login box, folding category lists etc. Plugins can be made visible in the sidebars of the site if it’s written as a widget. Each widget has a visual rendering that can be stylized by the theme through the modification of the theme’s CSS (cascaded stylesheets).

The theme of a WordPress site determines its look and feel; the plugins (and any associated widgets) determine the functionality available to users of the site.
